I'm Nick and I've been a wood turner and woodworker for many years. This site is about the pens and other items I make and offer for sale. I turn pens and other items on a wood lathe in my workshop ("The Shed") in Sydney. There is a sense of accomplishment in making something with your hands and this is something I really enjoy doing. Handcrafted wooden pens, made from spectacular Australian timbers
I have always liked timber and things made out of wood. It is only natural that I enjoy working with wood and making wooden items. Historically I have mostly made items for my family and home. A few years ago I purchased a lathe, which led to a lot of wood turning and a (large) number of bowls and pens that were given to family and friends. I ended up with a collection of pens that I started to sell. A friend or two suggested that I should have a website, and this is the result. I like to use native Australian timbers in my pen-making. Occasionally I indulge in the use of exotic timbers, such as ebony, mahogany or koa. I also use acrylics, both Australian-made and imported.
Why the name?
Why Offcut Woodworks? One day I was making a Rose Gum pen for my neighbours using offcuts from their new floor. Around the same time I was researching and thinking of what would be a good name for what I did. It occurred to me that when I'm turning I generally work with smaller pieces of wood and timber ... and offcuts. Offcut Woodworks was born.

There’s something really magical about using a handcrafted wooden pen created by Offcut Woodworks. No two pens, or no two items are really the same – they’re as unique as the person who uses them. My pens are truly unique, personalized, and will never be forgotten. Each pen is a one off. Yes, you could go to your local stationer and buy a “top quality” pen for as much or more, and your recipient will have a nice pen. But it will be just like every other nice pen in the country. Or you could give them a one-of-a-kind pen made just for them and that cannot be exactly duplicated, even by me. People say it’s the thought that counts, but if it’s someone special, why not give them something truly special?
Custom made pens, crafted from the heart
Do you have a piece of timber that means something special to you or has a place in your heart? Maybe it’s a piece from the tree in the front yard where you grew up. A sample from the tree your mum and dad planted together? You can have timber from this tree made into a pen or a bowl as a keepsake. Or maybe you just happen to like a particular piece of timber.
